A phrase from LB (Trucks) Sullivan of Coaching with LB has been coming up in a lot of my client conversations lately: slow down to speed up.
It sounds almost backwards in the business environment we’re in right now. Everything around us is telling us to move faster. AI is moving faster. Google is changing. Search is changing. Microsoft, Bing, LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, X, and seemingly every other platform are introducing something new. Business owners are hearing about AI search, SEO changes, new tools and new strategies, and the pressure to keep up with all of it is real.
I hear it in conversations with my clients all the time. “What about this?” “Should we be doing that?” “Did you see what Google changed?” “Are we behind if we’re not using this yet?”
There is so much information coming at business owners that it can feel like standing in the middle of a moving crowd and trying to figure out which direction you’re supposed to go.
That’s exactly when I think we need to slow down.
Not because the changes aren’t important. They are. At Marketing Angel, we’re watching these changes closely because they directly affect how our clients are found and how their authority is established online. But reacting to every announcement isn’t a strategy either.
Sometimes slowing down means getting back to a few basic questions. What are we trying to accomplish? Who are we trying to reach? What is actually working? What has changed enough that we need to adjust? Once we have those answers, we can create a plan, implement it, evaluate what happens, and make the next decision based on what we learned.
That process isn’t flashy, but it works.
My team hears me say something similar all the time. We can create a solid plan for a client today while also acknowledging that Google may change something next month. Something that worked six months ago may not work the same way today, and something we’re recommending now may need to be adjusted three months from now.
That’s simply the reality of marketing right now. Slow down to speed up.
The mistake would be believing that because everything is changing, we have to change everything at once.
We don’t.
After 17 years in marketing, I’ve learned that there will always be another platform update, another algorithm change and another tool someone says you absolutely have to use. AI has accelerated that cycle, but it hasn’t changed the need for good judgment.
In fact, I think good judgment matters more now.
Business owners need enough information to make smart decisions, but they also need the confidence to stop consuming information long enough to decide what actually applies to their business. Sometimes the smartest thing you can do is turn down the noise, look at the plan in front of you, and give it enough time to tell you something.
That’s what slowing down to speed up means to me.
It isn’t about resisting change. It’s about making sure the change you’re making has a purpose.
Get clear. Make the plan. Implement it. Look at the results. Adjust where necessary. Then begin again.
The technology may keep moving. Google will keep changing. AI will continue developing, and six months from now we’ll probably be having conversations about things we aren’t even thinking about today.
That’s okay.
You don’t have to outrun the entire marketplace. You need to understand what’s changing, know what matters for your business, and make the next right decision.
Sometimes slowing down long enough to do that is exactly what allows you to move forward faster. Slow down to speed up.
